Breastfeeding your baby reduces the risk of cot death

One of the most common questions we get asked is about how to reduce the risk of cot death. We understand that cot death is a subject which strikes fear in to the heart of any expectant Mum or Dad. The good news is research over recent years has done a lot to help reduce the risks.

The advice which has had a big positive effect was the ‘Back to sleep’ campaign.  Amongst other advice, babies are now recommended to be put to sleep on their backs. Don’t worry once your baby learns to roll and turn himself.  The theory is that if they can get in to that position themselves, they can get themselves out too.

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID ) recently announced its latest advice that breastfeeding your baby can reduce the risk of cot death. The advice, released to launch FSID’s cot death awareness drive ‘Save a Baby Month’, is based on research which showed that babies who were at least partly breastfed were one-third less likely to die as a cot death than babies who were never breastfed. For those inspired, FSID are organising mile long walks to increase awareness – perhaps worth putting on our trainers for.

Safe sleeping for Mums, Dads and new babies is something The Baby Gurus take seriously and is an important part of all our services.  Contact us for further information.
