Sick of morning sickness, tips to help ease

I met a friend yesterday who told me the great news that she was pregnant however her experience of early pregnancy was being severely affected by nausea not just in the morning but all day every day. It made me think back to my own experience and although those early weeks are filled with the exciting knowledge of a new baby, I can’t forget the feelings of extreme tiredness and never ending nausea. Forget the morning sickness. Morning, noon and night sickness would be closer to the mark!

My friend was struggling to eat anything and could only nibble on biscuits so I made a few suggestions about what might help.

  • Don’t get overtired.  If you are working, try to rest when you get home before your evening meal.
  • Try to identify any foods or smells that make the sickness worse and avoid them.
  • Fizzy drinks can help to settle your stomach.
  • Eat cold food like ice lollies or drink iced drinks.
  • Don’t let yourself get hungry.  Keep a supply of nutrious snacks handy.
There are lots of theories about why women experience nausea and vomiting although most experts agree that it is likely to be caused by changing hormones. Around 85% of women experience nausea in early pregnancy and for some this continues right through until they give birth.  The good news however for most women is that the symptoms are gone by 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy.
