Richard Goslan is a journalist from Scotland who spent 15 years in pursuit of adventure and stories around the world, only to end up back home in Glasgow, just round the corner from where he grew up. His endeavours were not in vain, however - he returned with a wife from California and three beautiful daughters. His first editor told him to write about what he knows – and at the moment, all he knows about is fatherhood.




Father's Day

It feels a bit perverse to even let the thought wave crackle across the synapses (is that how it works?), never mind to welcome it in and dwell on it. I probably shouldn’t even mention it.

But let’s be honest with each other. What a father wants more than anything else on this spurious day is a long lie and some peace and quiet.

Giri-choco this Valentines

Valentine’s Day looms with all the romance of a post-curry fart under the duvet.
It’s the day of the year when men are left with no excuse but to do something “romantic”. The fact that they’ve been boxed into that position through extreme pressure and relentless marketing kind of undoes the romantic part for me. Where’s the display of devotion in making a dash to the local florists, just because you risk getting grief if you fail to make any kind of gesture?

Wow, they are selling a lot of junk for kids this year

It's kids TV’s only saving grace - our favourite children's channel is blissfully free of adverts for dodgy plastic toys in the run up to Christmas, which you're bombarded with when you watch a more commercial channel. Of course, the cheaper the toy looks, the more likely you are to lose bits of it all over the house within five minutes of ripping off the wrapping paper, and the more my girls want it. Hummm.
